Wayne, N.J., January 11, 2021 — New Jersey’s average gas price increased eight cents this week to $2.47 ($2.39). Today’s price is 19 cents higher than a month ago ($2.28), but still 17 cents cheaper than one year ago ($2.64). New Jersey’s average gas price is 16 cents higher than the national average, and is the ninth most expensive state in the country for a gallon of regular gas.
AAA Northeast’s January 11th survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $2.31, six cents cheaper than last week ($2.25). Today’s national average price is 16 cents higher than a month ago ($2.15), but 27 cents cheaper than this day last year.
“Gas prices are rising as supply tightens and crude oil gets more expensive. Decreasing demand is outweighed by these other factors at the moment,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “Last week crude oil pushed to the highest price since before the pandemic. If crude prices remain high, Americans can expect to pay more at the pump this month.”
Gas prices are up throughout the region. Connecticut drivers saw the greatest jump at seven cents on the week to $2.34 ($2.27). In New York and Pennsylvania, drivers are paying five cents more at $2.38 ($2.33) and $2.61 ($2.56), respectively.
The average gas price in Connecticut and New York dropped two cents from last week to $2.14 and $2.22, respectively ($2.16, $2.24). Motorists in Pennsylvania are seeing an average price of $2.45, one cent cheaper than last week ($2.46). California has the highest average for a gallon of gas, at $3.29/gallon, while Mississippi has the lowest at $1.99/gallon.
