Pandemic-weary Americans – many of them vaccinated and eager to scratch their travel itch – are flying the friendly skies. As of last Thursday, more than 1 million airline passengers traveled throughout the US for the 50th consecutive day, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
Before this streak, there hadn’t even been 7 consecutive million-passenger days during the pandemic, AAA Northeast said.
“Americans are ready to travel, and increased traffic at airports shows that,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “The travel industry expects a barnburner of a summer, and this streak justifies that optimism.”
In fact, more than 1.6 million airline passengers – the most since March 12, 2020 – flew Sunday, May 2.
AAA travel advisors are fielding numerous travel inquiries from people who are planning trips after a year at home. Based on AAA bookings, the 10 top destinations for travelers are:
- Orlando
- Aruba
- European river cruises
- Caribbean cruises
- Las Vegas
- Bahamas
- Cancun
- Alaska
- Bermuda
- Ft. Myers
No matter where they go, travelers should continue to wear masks, take other travel precautions, and stay informed about any restrictions at their destination. AAA has compiled many of these restrictions as a resource for travelers at aaa.com/CovidMap.
