Providence, R.I., August 10, 2021 — Rhode Island’s average gas price is up 1 cent from last week ($3.05), averaging $3.06 per gallon. Today’s price is 3 cents higher than a month ago ($3.03) and 92 cents higher than August 10, 2020 ($2.14). Rhode Island’s average gas price is 12 cents lower than the national average.
“We continue to see very robust gasoline demand for the peak summer driving season,” said Diana Gugliotta, Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “The latest demand rate was 2% higher than the same time period in 2019, while gasoline stocks are about 1% below.”
AAA Northeast’s August 10 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be the same as last week, averaging $3.18 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 4 cents higher than a month ago ($3.14), and $1.01 higher than this day last year ($2.17).

August can be a busy month at the pump with school starting and others taking last minute summer trips. AAA offers these daily driving tips to help save on gas:
- Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.
- Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine. It is unnecessary and wastes fuel.
- When approaching a red light or stop sign, take your foot off the gas early and allow your car to coast down to a slower speed until it is time to brake.
- Accelerate smoothly with light to moderate throttle. This allows the automatic transmission to upshift into higher gears sooner, reducing engine rpm and saving fuel.
- AAA members can save at the pump by joining the Fuel Rewards at Shell program at AAA.com/Shell. Members save 30 cents per gallon on their first fill-up when they join between now and August 31, 2021.
