Wayne, N.J., March 14, 2022 — New Jersey’s average gas price is up 16 cents from last week, averaging $4.33 per gallon ($4.17). Today’s price is 74 cents more than a month ago ($3.59), and $1.41 more than this time last year ($2.92). Since March 10, 2022, when the average price for a gallon of gas hit $4.37, the price has fallen little by little to today’s average.
The national average price for a gallon of gas rose 26 cents this week to $4.32 ($4.06), which is 84 cents higher than a month ago ($3.48), and $1.47 higher than this date in 2021 ($2.85). On March 11, the average price for a gallon of gas hit a high of $4.33.
After peaking above $123/barrel shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the price of crude oil has gradually fallen below $110. If this trend holds, it may remove some of the extreme upward price pressure consumers have found at the pump, but not all.
“It bears reminding that the cost of oil accounts for about 50% of what drivers pay at the pump,” said Robert Sinclair, Senior Manager of Media Relations for AAA Northeast. “This war is roiling an already tight global oil market and making it hard to determine if we are near a peak for pump prices, or if they keep grinding higher. It all depends on the direction of oil prices.”
The average gas price increased 23 cents in New York to $4.49 ($4.26) and 21 cents in Connecticut to $4.46 ($4.28). Pennsylvania had the smallest increase (19 cents) to $4.42 ($4.23). Connecticut landed on the list of Top 10 Most Expensive states to buy gas this week (#10), while New York and Pennsylvania were knocking on the door at #11 and #12, respectively. New Jersey fell five spots to #18.
