Wayne, N.J., April 4, 2022 — New Jersey’s average gas price dropped five cents this week to $4.16 ($4.21). Today’s average price is down 21 cents from the high of $4.37 we saw on March 10, but it’s still 27 cents higher than a month ago ($3.89) and $1.25 higher than April 4, 2021 ($2.91). New Jersey’s average price is two cents less than the National average.
The national average price for a gallon of gas is down six cents this week to $4.18 ($4.24), which is 35 cents higher than a month ago ($3.83), and $1.31 higher than this date in 2021 ($2.87).
President Biden’s decision to release one million barrels of oil per day for six months (180 million barrels) from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) helped send the global oil price tumbling to near $100 bbl. The release is intended to stem rising energy prices.
“The upward push on oil prices caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine is meeting stronger downward pressure from the planned SPR oil release and increased COVID fears in China,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “And lower global oil prices are reflected in falling pump prices for consumers in the U.S.”
With a gas tax holiday in effect, the average gas price plummeted in Connecticut, averaging $4.03 today, down 27 cents from last week ($4.30). Drivers in New York and Pennsylvania are paying a nickel less than last week at $4.29 and $4.27, respectively ($4.34, $4.32).
