Despite historically high gas prices, freedom calls a record number of Americans to embark on the Great American Road trip this July 4th holiday, says AAA Northeast.
Independence Day road volume will set a record this year as 42 million drivers expect to explore the land that they love between June 30 and July 4, says AAA.
“This year’s summer travel numbers are a sign people are ready for a break,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “And despite everything costing more this year – gas, food, accommodations — folks are finding ways to take much-needed vacations.”
Overall, nearly 48 million travelers – a 3.7% increase over last year — will drive, fly or cruise 50 miles or more this year, said Mayko. Of this national total:
- 42 million or 88% will drive
- 3.5 million or 7% will fly and
- 2.4 million or 5% will take some other mode of transportation, such as cruises or trains.
“Driving continues to be the most convenient, comfortable, affordable and flexible way to travel, especially if you have kids,” said Mayko.
What’s driving record car travel this holiday? “It’s concerns about airline issues such as staff shortages, cancelled flights and unexpected delays,” said Mayko. AAA recommends airline travelers to work with a travel agent.
So, look for busy roads and packed airports this holiday. The afternoons of June 30 and July 1 are expected to be the peak traffic times and days for drivers, who mix with commuters on roadways; while for airline travelers, July 1 is expected to be the busiest air travel day with the July 4th holiday being the lightest.
This holiday, travelers are heading to big cities, both domestically and internationally. Orlando, Seattle, and New York are the top three domestic destinations; while Vancouver, Paris and London cap the list of international destinations.
