Can drivers continue to catch a small break during these times of high gas prices? Only time will tell, says AAA Northeast.
As national and statewide averages continue to fall, demand has risen, which could very well push up prices at the pump — again.
Today, the average price for a gallon of self-serve regular in Connecticut is $4.34, a nickel lower than last week. It’s $1.17 higher than last year.
Nationally, today’s average of $4.21 is 14 cents lower than last week. It’s $1.04 higher than last year.
“We know most American drivers have altered in their driving habits to cope with high gas prices,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “But with gas dropping below $4 at nearly half of gas stations nationwide, it’s very possible demand could rise, reversing the current trend.”
New AAA survey data recently reported nearly two-thirds of drivers have made lifestyle changes to cope with high prices. How? They’re driving less, combining errands, and reducing shopping/dining out trips, the survey said.
Here is AAA’s weekly price survey of Connecticut’s six metro regions:
Greater Bridgeport $4.49 Lower Fairfield County $4.50
New Haven/Meriden $4.32 Greater Hartford $4.28
New London/Norwich $4.35 Windham/Middlesex $4.30
Statewide Average: $4.34
Today, Texas and South Carolina both register the lowest prices in the nation at $3.71 and $3.74, respectively. California and Hawaii hold the highest prices in the nation at $5.61 and $5.44, respectively. Connecticut moved from the 25th spot to the 22nd spot on the list of states with the highest gas prices in the nation. Visit www.gasprices.aaa.com for daily average gas prices.
