Wayne, N.J., September 26, 2022 — The average price for a gallon of gas in New Jersey dropped 11 cents from last week to today’s price of $3.48 ($3.59). The average price in the Garden State is 51 cents cheaper than a month ago ($3.99), but still 26 cents more than this day a year ago ($3.22).
While prices locally continue to fall, some parts of the country are seeing increases. Low domestic demand as fewer drivers fuel up and much lower oil prices have helped to blunt some of the impact. On Friday, the price of oil slipped below $80 a barrel for the first time since January, primarily due to fears of a recession-led global economic slowdown.
New Jersey’s average gas price is 24 cents cheaper than the national average of $3.72, which is up 5 cents from last week ($3.67). The national average is down 14 cents since last month ($3.86), but remains 54 cents higher than on September 26, 2021 ($3.18).
“Slack demand and lower oil prices should take some pressure off rising gas prices,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “But Hurricane Ian could cause problems, depending on the storm’s track, by disrupting oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and impacting large coastal refineries.”
Gas prices in surrounding states are down as well. Connecticut drivers are paying the least at $3.34, down six cents from last week ($3.86). The average price in Pennsylvania is $3.98, down 14 cents from a week ago ($4.12). And New York motorists are paying $4.00, down 12 cents from one week ago ($4.12).
