Connecticut drivers aren’t getting their tinsel in tangle this week because they’ve received an early holiday present: state prices are a nickel lower since last week, says AAA Northeast.
Today, the statewide average for a gallon of self-serve regular is $3.21, 15 cents lower than last week, and 31 cents lower than last year. Average prices also continue to drop on the national level. Today, the national average is $3.14, 12 cents lower than last week and 17 cents lower than last year. Today, about 20 states are now enjoying price averages below $3 a gallon.
Lower demand, higher supplies and lower crude prices are all are contributing to lower prices at the pump, said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman.
“Lower demand usually coincides with the winter driving season because fewer people are driving when with shorter days and inclement weather,” Mayko added. “The cost of crude – the driving force of prices at the pump – has also hovered in the low-to-mid $70s per-barrel range. That’s $50 less than last Spring’s peak!”
