Wayne, N.J., January 3, 2023 — New Jersey’s average gas price rose 10 cents to start the new year, to today’s price of $3.31/gallon ($3.21). A month ago, the average price was $3.61, while it was $3.38 at the beginning of January 2022.
AAA Northeast’s January 3rd survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $3.22, up 12 cents from last week ($3.10). The national average was $3.42 a month ago, and $3.28 a year ago.
The frigid temperatures in late December impacted gas prices nationally, causing them to spike, with refineries as far south as Texas and the Gulf Coast forced to shut down temporarily. The winter storm coming at the start of the holiday travel season caused drivers to fuel up and hit the road early to beat the bad weather, leading to a spike in overall gas demand.
“The cost of gas may fluctuate due to less expensive oil and a return to seasonal driving patterns,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “But 2022 will go down as a record year with a national annual average of $3.96.”
Gas prices fluctuated around the region as well. The average price in Connecticut is $3.17, up four cents from last week ($3.13). In New York, the average price held steady at $3.41, and in Pennsylvania, the average rose four cents to $3.63 ($3.59).
