Wayne, N.J., February 6, 2023 — After an eight-cent increase last week, New Jersey’s average gas price dropped six cents this week to today’s average of $3.39 ($3.45). Today’s price is eight cents higher than one month ago ($3.31), but 10 cents cheaper than one year ago ($3.49).
AAA Northeast’s February 6th survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $3.47, a three-cent decrease from last week ($3.50). The national average was $3.29 a month ago, and $3.43 a year ago.
Last week’s decision by OPEC+ to maintain current production levels and not make any cuts led to lower oil prices. But Friday’s blockbuster U.S. report of 517,000 jobs added in January, dropping the unemployment rate to a 54-year low of 3.4%, may have the opposite effect. Are recession fears fading, and could a healthier global economy lead to more demand for oil and higher prices?
“Keep an eye on the price of oil, because it accounts for nearly 60% of what we pay at the pump,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “Rising or falling oil prices can have a direct impact on motorists’ wallets.”
Gas prices decreased around the region as well, although New Jersey drivers saw the largest decline. The average price in Pennsylvania is $3.76, down three cents from last week ($3.79), while New York saw a two-cent decrease from $3.57 to $3.55. Connecticut saw the smallest decrease – one cent to today’s price of $3.34 ($3.35).
