Connecticut drivers saw a fourth nickel increase in fuel taxes earlier this week as the state continues its incremental tax phase-in at the pump, says AAA Northeast.
The monthly nickel increase began January 1 and continues through May until the full 25-cent a gallon tax is reached.
In Connecticut, today’s $3.30 average price is 4 cents higher than last week, and 75 cents lower than last year.
Nationally, today’s $3.51 average for a gallon of self-serve regular is 9 cents higher than last week and 68 cents lower than last year.
“Robust demand and rising oil prices are the driving factors for the recent uptick in pump prices,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman.
As demand increases, domestic supply has decreased substantially, which also is contributing to higher prices. “If demand continues to rise because of warmer weather, pump prices will follow suit,” said Mayko.
Here is AAA’s weekly price survey of Connecticut’s six metro regions:
Greater Bridgeport $3.35 Lower Fairfield County $3.31
New Haven/Meriden $3.28 Greater Hartford $3.27
New London/Norwich $3.30 Windham/Middlesex $3.34
Statewide Average: $3.30
Today, Mississippi registers the lowest prices in the nation at $3.02, followed by Arkansas and Oklahoma, both at $3.09. California and Hawaii continue to hold the highest prices in the nation at $4.83 and $4.79, respectively. Connecticut holds the 29th spot on the list of highest gas prices in the nation.
