Wayne, N.J., April 17, 2023 — New Jersey’s average gas price rose again this week to today’s average price of $3.45, up seven cents from last week ($3.38). Today’s average price is 16 cents higher than a month ago ($3.29), but still 59 cents cheaper than what drivers were paying last year ($4.04).
AAA Northeast’s April 17th survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $3.67, up seven cents from last week ($3.60). The national average price is 22 cents higher than a month ago ($3.45), but 41 cents less than a year ago ($4.09). The main culprit behind the increases is the high cost of oil, gasoline’s main ingredient, which is hovering in the low $80s per barrel. The national average has risen daily since March 29.
“When the cost of crude oil crosses the $80 a barrel mark, that puts a lot of upward pressure on what we pay at the pump,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “As long as oil costs remain at the current level, drivers will likely see incremental price increases for now.”
Average gas prices increase in all surrounding states this week. The average pump price increased by seven cents in New York and Pennsylvania to $3.61 and $3.67, respectively ($3.54, $3.69). Connecticut drivers saw the highest increase – 10 cents – to today’s price of $3.51 ($3.41).
