As we approach the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, demand for gas is rising, but the lower cost of crude is keeping prices relatively steady at the pump, said AAA Northeast.
Today’s statewide average for a gallon of self-serve regular is $3.53, 2 cents lower than last week and 98 cents lower than last year. On the national level, today’s $3.54 average is the same as last week and 93 cents less than last year.
“Higher demand usually drives pump prices higher,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman, “But the cost for oil has remained low lately. As Memorial Day draws near, drivers should benefit from stable pump prices.”
Crude prices are in the low $70 a barrel range. In addition, the market is jittery because of concerns about a potential recession, which could push oil demand and prices lower.
