Here’s a scary sight for state drivers: Connecticut’s average gas price has spiked 23 cents over the last week.
Today’s statewide average for a gallon of self-serve regular is $3.71 because the Northeast is experiencing higher wholesale prices and less deliveries compared to the rest of the country, said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman.
“Right now, there’s not enough product being sent to New England and that’s pushing statewide prices higher,” she added.
Although The Nutmeg State is one of 10 states that saw the largest weekly change this week, prices may not increase for long, as other states are seeing price dips at the pump, she said. “Only time will tell when Connecticut prices drop again,” Mayko added.
On the National level, today’s average of $3.76 is 3 cents lower than last week and 36 cents higher than last year.
Several weeks ago, the West Coast experienced tight supplies as western refineries underwent maintenance. Since refineries are back online, California’s average price today is 85 cents cheaper than its early October peak which has taken the pressure off the national average, Mayko explained.
Here is AAA’s weekly price survey of Connecticut’s six metro regions:
Greater Bridgeport $3.77 Lower Fairfield County $3.76
New Haven/Meriden $3.68 Greater Hartford $3.68
New London/Norwich $3.70 Windham/Middlesex $3.74
Statewide Average: $3.71
Today, Georgia and Texas register the lowest prices in the nation at $3.15 and $3.18, respectively. California and Hawaii hold the highest prices in the nation at $5.57 and $5.22, respectively. Connecticut is now in the 26th place on the list of highest gas prices in the nation. Average gas prices may be obtained daily through www.gasprices.aaa.com.
