The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued 932 safety recalls affecting more than 30 million vehicles last year, the second highest number of recalls, since the federal agency began issuing warnings more than 50 years ago, a AAA Northeast analysis has found. The year 2021 had the highest number in NHTSA history.
AAA Northeast is sharing this information to highlight National Vehicle Safety Recall Week through March 12 and urges consumers to visit NHTSA.gov/recalls or download the SaferCar app to check the status of every vehicle they drive. Consumers can also sign up for periodic recall alerts through the sites.
“Checking for recalls is an easy process,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “Some of these recalls can cause serious safety hazards and they should be repaired immediately.”
AAA Northeast’s analysis of NHTSA data also determined that four categories – equipment, electrical systems, steering, and back over prevention systems – experienced record-high numbers of recalls in 2022.
If your vehicle is affected by a safety recall, contact your nearest dealer to schedule a free repair immediately, said Mayko. An urgent Takata air bag recall, currently the largest recall in US history, is underway. Find out if your vehicle is involved in this recall.
