Wayne, N.J., April 10, 2023 — New Jersey’s average gas price increased with a vengeance this week, rising 12 cents to today’s average of $3.38 ($3.26). Today’s average price is eight cents higher than a month ago ($3.30), but 71 cents cheaper than last year ($4.09).
AAA Northeast’s April 10th survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $3.60, up 10 cents from last week ($3.50). The national average price is 13 cents higher than a month ago ($3.47), but 51 cents less than a year ago ($4.11).
OPEC’s announcement that it will cut production by over a million barrels per day took the oil market by surprise. In response, crude immediately surged well above $80 a barrel, although it has since struggled to stay above that mark.
“The oil market has had some time to digest the OPEC news and speculate about the reason, leading to the price of oil stabilizing for now,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “Since the cost of oil accounts for more than 50% of what we pay at the pump, drivers may not catch a break at the pump any time soon.”
The average gas price increased in all surrounding states. Average pump prices increased by 12 cents in Connecticut and Pennsylvania to $3.41 and $3.69, respectively ($3.54, $3.57). New York drivers saw the smallest increase, with today’s average price of $3.54 reflecting a seven-cent increase ($3.47).
