Wayne, N.J., May 1, 2023 — New Jersey drivers got a slight reprieve this week as the average gas price dropped four cents to $3.48 ($3.52). Today’s average price is 22 cents higher than a month ago ($3.26), but nearly 75 cents cheaper than a year ago ($4.22).
AAA Northeast’s May 1st survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be $3.61, down five cents from last week ($3.66). The national average price is 11 cents higher than a month ago ($3.50), but 57 cents cheaper than a year ago ($4.18).
A lower oil price is causing pump prices to stabilize or fall, with the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline dropping a nickel since last week to hit $3.61.
“The local and national averages might be at or near the peak price for now,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northeast. “As long as the oil cost keeps wobbling around the low to mid $70s per barrel, drivers will benefit when they fuel up.”
While New York’s average gas price increased by two cents this week to $3.70 ($3.68), the average price in Connecticut dropped by two cents to $3.57 ($3.59). In Pennsylvania, drivers saw a four-cent drop to this week’s average price of $4.73 ($4.77).
