While January temperatures have been milder than normal, frigid temperatures in the area are on the horizon next week, which may impact vehicle performance, says AAA Northeast.
“No one wants to be stranded in the cold,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “So properly preparing your vehicle for cold weather is essential.”
During the winter, battery failure is the primary reason for emergency calls to AAA Northeast so get cranking on your car maintenance today, Mayko said. A car engine needs about 30% more energy to start when the temperatures drop below freezing. “At zero degrees, your vehicle battery can only deliver 50% of its rated capacity,” said Mayko.
To prepare for impending cold weather, AAA Northeast offers drivers these cold weather car preparation tips:
- Have your battery and charging system checked: If it’s more than three years old, have the car battery tested by a professional. To start up during a cold snap, your car will need a fully charged battery.
- Examine your tires for tread depth and uneven wearing. Proper tire tread increases traction in poor weather conditions and can prevent skids on icy or wet surfaces.
- Check your coolant when the engine is cold. Also inspect cooling system lines for leakage, cracks or loose clamps.
- Change your oil based on manufacturer recommendations. Synthetic oil can be an advantage in cold weather because it allows for faster starts.
- Replace wiper blades that don’t adequately clean your windshield. Consider installing winter blades to prevent snow and ice buildup that can interfere with visibility.
- And finally, you may want to refrain from driving in snow or icy conditions. Don’t use cruise control, allow for a greater following distance between vehicles, and avoid slamming on brakes on icy or snowy roads.
